Tongan Government announces $400,000 Sports Fund

The Government of Tonga announced its financial contribution of $400,000 pa’anga to support sports, including the Tongan Rugby Union team, the Tongan Rugby League team, and the Tongan Amateur Sports Association and National Olympic Committee.

The Minister of Internal Afairs Lord Vaea today at a press conference announced that the Funds had been allocated to finance national sports teams in the face of major upcoming international competitions.

The funds were approved by Cabinet in response to requests for assistance by each of the related Sports Federations.

A $100,000 Pa’anga was allocated to player allowances in the ‘Ikale Tahi rugby team for its upcoming European tour next month, $250,000 Pa’anga was allocated to player allowances in the Mate Ma’a Tonga rugby league team for its world cup campaign and $50,000 Pa’anga was allocated to fund Tonga’s team to the 2014 Winter Olympics.
