Yere makes surprise return for Sheffield
SHEFFIELD Eagles have been boosted by the surprise return of record try-scorer Menzie Yere.
It had been feared the Papua New Guinea international would be sidelined by a knee injury but after training last week he started against North Wales Crusaders.
The burly centre, who started his career as a fullback for the Agmark Gurias in the PNG domestic competition, put in a series of crunching tackles and scored the last of the Eagles 10 tries in a 56-6 win earlier this month.
The 31-year-old said after the game he had not felt any reaction to the injury.
“The knee was okay, it was good. I feel good and I want to keep playing,” Yere, who joined the club after the 2008 World Cup said.
The centre scored a club record 46 tries last season.
His try against Crusaders has taken him to eight points from reaching 500 for the Eagles since joining them in 2009.
It had been feared the centre would need major knee surgery after going off in a game at Workington last month.
Coach Mark Aston was delighted to have Yere back in the team with third placed Featherstone Rovers at Owlerton Stadium on Sunday. “The nice thing is Menzie (Yere) was out there at Wrexham and looked good and strong,” Aston said of the 2013 Rugby League World Cup player.
“Three weeks ago, we thought he had done his ACL (anterior crucial ligament) and that was it for the season.
“He came to training last week and said he wanted to play. We gave him a tough fitness testlast month and he came through. Has he got an ACL problem – well who knows?”
Aston added: “Menzie’s a threat and hopefully he can keep playing.”
Quentin Laulu-Togagae and Scott Turner have been named in the Kingstone Press Championship team of the week after both scored a hat-trick of tries against Crusaders.
