Papua New Guinea's star rugby player, Justin Olam, has expressed doubts about the country's readiness to support a National Rugby League (NRL) team. Despite growing enthusiasm and support for the sport in PNG, Olam believes crucial steps are missing in the development pathway that would lead to a successful NRL team. "There's no steps to follow or proper pathway and play in the Digicel Cup," Olam stated, referring to the country's domestic rugby league competition.

Olam's reservations highlight a concern that PNG might be attempting to leapfrog essential stages in developing its rugby league infrastructure. He suggests that establishing a strong foundation is vital before considering an NRL team. "My personal point of view is that I think we're jumping a few steps. There's nothing wrong with getting an NRL team, but I think not now," Olam commented. His stance suggests that while the idea of having an NRL team is appealing, the timing and current state of rugby development in PNG are not yet adequate.

The rugby star emphasizes the importance of nurturing grassroots football and junior football programs. He believes that PNG's focus should be on developing these areas to create a sustainable and competitive rugby environment. "In a couple of years' time. Players-wise, for me personally, I think we should have a foundation first, and that is developing grassroots football, junior football," Olam explained. His view underlines the necessity of building a robust player development system to ensure long-term success.

PNG has made significant strides in rugby league, but Olam's caution suggests that more needs to be done to prepare players adequately for the rigors of the NRL.
