Hayne wary of more pain
After almost two months out of action Jarryd Hayne returns for Parramatta against the Wests Tigers on Friday, but admits he's still fearful of damaging his troublesome hamstring.
The star fullback has watched helplessly from the sidelines as the Eels slumped to 10 straight losses after injuring himself against the Sydney Roosters in June, just two days after starring in NSW's win over Queensland in the State of Origin opener.
But after being put through a strenuous fitness test earlier this week Hayne said he's now ready to help stop the rot against the Eels' fellow strugglers.
However, the sight of heavy rain over Sydney on Thursday and Friday was the last thing the 25-year-old wanted to see.
"I am a bit nervous, I've been out for a while," Hayne said.
"It's pretty devastating knowing it is going to be raining tomorrow and will be a wet track.
"It would have been good to have a fast track, but it's not to be.
"It will play on my mind a bit because it will put more pressure through my hammy."
Eels coach Ricky Stuart said recently Hayne may not play again this season to ensure he was fit to play in the Rugby League World Cup but the representative star said he would be ready to board the plane if called upon by Test mentor Tim Sheens.
He also denied he was taking a risk by returning to action and said it wasn't too soon.
"Sticky's (Stuart) been to the medical staff and they've been concerned with the tendon and the fact I have done it before," he said.
"I am playing because this is my job and what I get paid for," he said.
"I could always have given it one more week, but I feel good, have got through the fitness sessions and have ticked off all the boxes and I'll be right."
The game between the NRL's two bottom teams will see the last time two of the genuine superstars of the game come up against one another with Tigers playmaker Benji Marshall set to move to rugby at the end of the season.
A win for the Eels would end the club's worst run of results since 1995-96.
"I am looking forward to playing against Benji one last time, it should be fun," Hayne said.
"It's been a tough couple of weeks, we haven't been too far off and the opportunities we've missed have been disappointing."
"Hopefully I can help amend that and we get over the line."
