Menzie Yere is on course to set new try scoring record

Papua New Guinea star Menzie Yere is on course to set a new try scoring record at for his English club team.

The powerful centre is enjoying his best season at Sheffield Eagles and has scored 32 tries.

That’s put him within touching distance of the 35 tries scored by Samoan international Quentin Laulu-Togagae in 2012 to break the previous record that had stood for 23 years.

It’s won praise from club coach Mark Aston who is also happy that Yere has agreed a new one-year deal that will keep him at Sheffield in 2014.

“I’m delighted that Menzie has signed a new one year deal to stay with us,” said Aston. “It’ll be his sixth season in Sheffield and he’s done a great job.

“Menzie is a real asset to Sheffield Eagles. His family are settled in Sheffield and he’s happy to be staying.”

“Menzie has the chance to break the try scoring record, only a year after QLT (Quentin Laulu-Togagae) set it. It took 20 years for the old record to go now it looks like it won’t last a year.”

Yere has the chance to help Sheffield to win the Northern Rail Cup for the first time this weekend.

The Eagles face Leigh Centurions in the final of the knockout competition for professional clubs outside the Super League in the English game.

A win would be a consolation for Sheffield after their exit from the Challenge Cup to Super League club London Broncos (29-10) last weekend – a game in which Yere scored the Eagles second try.

“It’d be good if Menzie could add a couple against Leigh in the Rail Cup and hopefully he’ll keep scoring like that for the rest of the season,” added Aston
