Daley to coach PM's league XIII v PNG

NSW State of Origin coach Laurie Daley will get one more crack at taking down former teammate Mal Meninga after being put in charge of the Prime Minister's XIII.

Daley was appointed to succeed Meninga as coach of the invitational side, which will take on Papua New Guinea in Kokopo on September 29.

The side is made up of Australian players not involved in the later rounds of the NRL finals series.

Meninga, who has coached the PM's XIII since the event's inception in 2005 for seven wins and a draw, has taken up a coaching role with the Kumuls ahead of the end-of-year World Cup.

Former teammates with Canberra and Australia, Meninga had the better of Daley as coaches in this year's State of Origin series - the Maroons winning for an eighth straight year under Meninga's watch.

"I feel privileged to take on this role and promote our great game in PNG," Daley said in a statement.

"They love their footy over there and we are again expecting a fantastic welcome and a tough match as both teams prepare for World Cup selection.

"Mal is a good friend and has done a great job with this program over the past eight years."

The PM's XIII will be named on September 17.
