TEAM P.N.G AT HOME IN MACKAY

While they were disappointed to miss out on the Mackay Basketball Australia Day Weekend Tournament last weekend, the Papua New Guinea Men’s National Basketball squad is making the most of their time in Mackay, after arriving into town on Wednesday.
The squad of twenty players and six officials are in the midst of a seven day training camp being held at Mackay Basketball. The training camp in planned to be an integral part of the national sides preparation for the 2015 Pacific Games, which will be held in Port Moresby in July.
Throughout their week long stay, the team will take part in twelve on-court training sessions, along with three games. The first game will see the squad face off against each other, the second is against the Under 23 Mackay Meteors and in the third, they verse the McDonald’s Meteors QBL side.
The squad’s first game takes place tonight at 6pm at the Mackay Multi-Sports stadium, where the group will be split into two equal sides for an inter-squad match-up.
Team P.N.G will then face the Under 23 Mackay Meteors on Sunday afternoon at 4pm, before taking on the McDonald’s Meteors QBL senior team on Tuesday night at 7:30pm.
Mackay Basketball Manager and Papua New Guinea Head Coach Joel Khalu said it was great for the team to finally be in Mackay.
“Originally we had the guys scheduled to play in our Australia Day Tournament, but with some challenges along the way, that didn’t eventuate as planned,” Khalu said.
“Things still worked out really well though, as we still get a seven day training camp in Mackay, which includes three tough games.”
“It’s great preparation for the team as we prepare for the 2015 Pacific Games which are not too far away.”
“I certainly think both games will be exciting to watch and hopefully we can get a few people along to the stadium to support,” Khalu added.
Entry to Sunday’s 4pm game will be free, while entry to Tuesday night's showcase will be via gold coin donation.
