PNG Hunters may look to co-captains for 2016
The departure of the former PNG Hunters skipper to the London Broncos has left a gaping hole in Michael Marum’s roster.
With no certainty as to who will gain the leadership role, Marum has at this stage considered having co-captains to take the helm for the 2016 Intrust Super Cup season.
Whilst Marum is as usual tight-lipped on letting the cat out of the bag at this stage, he did indicate that the candidates would come from the senior rank and file members. When queried on the issue, Marum said several names are being considered.
"We will probably look at co-captains for next year.
"It will come from the experienced players who normally play a full game," he added.
Marum said this will be confirmed during the second phase of the pre-season training when the players return from their break on January 5.
Without giving much away, the replacement or replacements will most likely come from regular starters in Wartovo Puara Jr (hooker), Noel Zeming (centre), Adex Wera (wing) or the ‘iceman’ Adam Korave (lock).
In regards to the squad itself, Marum said they have up to 28 players including Warren Glare.
He said with injuries to players during the pre-season they will have issues for a fully fit 25 men squad.
"In any case we will have eight weeks when the players return back to camp in Port Moresby from the Christmas and New Year break," he added.
Marum further said a trial match will be played before the season opener on March 6, but cannot confirm those details as yet.
