SP PNG Hunters Overcome Tweed Heads Seagulls with 26-20 Victory in Round 5
The SP PNG Hunters emerged victorious with a 26-20 win over the Tweed Heads Seagulls in Round 5 of the Hostplus Cup, played at Cbus Super Stadium on the Gold Coast. The match saw the Hunters withstand a late rally from the Seagulls to secure the important win.
Tweed Heads drew first blood in the 2nd minute through Phoenix Steinwede, but the Hunters responded quickly, with Solo Wane scoring in the 15th minute and Sanny Wabo crossing the line just three minutes later, in the 18th minute. This gave the Hunters an early 10-4 lead.
Murray Connors extended the lead further with a try in the 26th minute, while Jamie Mavoko successfully converted two of the three tries, giving the Hunters a 16-4 lead at the halftime break. The Seagulls struggled to get back into the game during the opening half.
The second half started with Jay Kirk's try for Tweed Heads in the 44th minute, but the Hunters quickly regained control, as Sanny Wabo completed his hat-trick with tries in the 47th and 68th minutes. Mavoko converted his third try of the match in the 70th minute to keep the Hunters firmly in front.
Despite trailing, the Seagulls continued to fight back. Zane Harrison's try in the 57th minute and JJ Collins' try in the 74th minute brought the score closer. Lindon McGrady converted both tries, narrowing the margin to 26-20 in the final minutes of the game.
Sanny Wabo’s exceptional performance, which included a hat-trick of tries, was pivotal to the Hunters' success. His contributions in both attack and defence helped the team maintain their lead throughout the match.
Although Tweed Heads put up a strong fight, the Hunters' defence held firm in the closing stages, securing a hard-earned victory. The final score read 26-20 in favour of the SP PNG Hunters.
With this crucial win, the Hunters look to build on their momentum as they prepare for their next encounter in the Hostplus Cup, aiming to continue their climb up the league standings.
