NRL: Johnston Signs On With Souths, Pursues Legacy and Record
South Sydney Rabbitohs and Papua New Guinea winger Alex Johnston has re-signed with the club for another two seasons, extending his contract through to 2027.
The 30-year-old, who has already notched up 207 tries in 237 matches, is targeting more than just team success — he’s also closing in on Ken Irvine’s NRL try-scoring record of 212.
“I’m really happy to continue my journey here,” said Johnston. “Our results haven’t been great recently, but we’ve got what it takes to rebuild and return to the top.”
Johnston, who debuted in 2014, is a Souths junior and proud Indigenous Australian from the La Perouse Panthers. His contributions have gone far beyond the scoreboard, with 10 caps for PNG, one for Australia, and four for the Indigenous All Stars.
Mark Ellison, the Rabbitohs’ Head of Recruitment, highlighted Johnston’s value to the club as both a player and a community role model.
“He’s an inspiration across Indigenous communities and Papua New Guinea — a player who represents the Rabbitohs with pride on and off the field,” Ellison stated.
Johnston said the decision to stay was a family one, rooted in his deep connection to the club and its people. He remains a pivotal figure in South Sydney’s push for a new era of success.
