PNG’s Rhyse Martin Shines in Hull KR’s World Club Challenge Win
In a standout display, PNG Kumul captain Rhyse Martin helped Hull Kingston Rovers secure a 30-24 victory against Brisbane Broncos in the World Club Challenge at MKM Stadium, United Kingdom. Entering the match wearing the number 17 jersey, Martin made an immediate impact off the bench, showing why he remains one of PNG’s premier rugby league exports.

Martin’s performance included three successful conversions, a try assist, and 130 metres gained with the ball. His defensive contribution was significant, with 21 tackles completed throughout the match.
Though he was the only Papua New Guinean on the field, Martin had the support of fans back home, many of whom stayed up to watch their captain compete against last season’s NRL top side.
Hull KR opened the scoring with tries by Tom Amone (5’), Elliot Minchella (12’), and Joe Burgess (21’), while Brisbane responded with a single try from Gehamat Shibasaki in the first half. The Robins extended their lead in the second half through Oliver Gildart (49’) and Peta Hiku (55’), leaving the Broncos trailing 30-4.
Despite a late rally by Brisbane, who scored four tries in the final quarter, Hull KR held on to claim the win. This result further cements Super League dominance in the World Club Challenge, where NRL sides have struggled post-Covid, with the last NRL victory recorded by Sydney Roosters in 2020.
Fans in PNG praised Martin’s leadership and performance, calling it a “proud moment” for the nation’s rugby league community.
