Darius Boyd Named Queensland Maroons Head Coach for 2027 State of Origin Era

The Queensland Rugby League has appointed Darius Boyd as head coach of the Maroons, ending speculation over who would succeed Billy Slater after his five-year reign at the helm. Boyd has signed on for the next two years, covering the 2027 and 2028 State of Origin series.

Boyd's elevation comes despite having no NRL head coaching experience — a fact that has drawn attention given his New South Wales counterpart, Matt King, is in the same position after replacing Laurie Daley. It means both states will enter the 2027 series led by rookie head coaches at the elite level.

A decorated playing career

Boyd, 39, built his reputation across 337 NRL games with the Brisbane Broncos, St George Illawarra Dragons and Newcastle Knights, winning two premierships along the way. At representative level he was a Maroons mainstay, turning out 28 times for Queensland and crossing for 17 tries during a period that included the dynasty years under Mal Meninga.

Building coaching credentials

Since retiring as a player at the end of 2020, Boyd has worked to establish himself on the coaching side, spending time as an assistant under Kevin Walters at the Broncos before taking charge of Queensland's Under-19 side. In that role he guided the young Maroons to back-to-back series wins over New South Wales in 2025 and 2026, a track record the QRL pointed to in explaining its decision.

QRL chairman Brian Canavan said Boyd's playing achievements were matched by the work he had put in since retirement to grow as a coach and leader, and highlighted the strength of his relationships within the game. Boyd will also be able to draw on the experience of former mentors Mal Meninga and Wayne Bennett, both of whom were central to his development as a player.

A personal transformation

Boyd's appointment to rugby league's most prominent representative coaching job also caps a broader personal journey. Once known for a reputation of immaturity — including a fine from Brisbane over a 2008 nightclub incident — Boyd has since spoken candidly about his struggles with mental health, and his shift into a leadership role is widely viewed as reflecting significant personal growth alongside his professional development.

Speaking after the announcement, Boyd described the opportunity as a privileged one, adding that he understood the responsibility attached to it and saw his task as building on the legacy left by Queensland's past players and coaches.

He takes over a Maroons squad looking to reclaim dominance in the interstate arena after a 2-1 series defeat to New South Wales in 2026, with his first assignment as head coach set for the 2027 series opener.
