PNG Kumuls Legend Stanley Gene Appointed PNGRFL Coach Development Manager
The Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) has confirmed the appointment of PNG Kumul legend Stanley Gene as the new Coach Development Manager.
According to PNGRFL, Gene brings extensive experience to the role, having played over 350 games in the English Super League and First Division. His career also included stints with the Goroka Lahanis and Lae Bombers before moving overseas. He represented the PNG Kumuls in 16 Test Matches, including three World Cups, before transitioning into coaching, where he led Gateshead Thunder and worked as an assistant coach at Hull KR in the Super League.
PNGRFL CEO Stanley Hondina welcomed Gene’s return, describing it as a significant step forward for PNG rugby league. He stated that Gene’s coaching background would greatly benefit local clubs as efforts continue to develop the game.
Gene’s immediate focus is expected to be on supporting Digicel ExxonMobil Cup coaches and launching a Talent Identification Program for aspiring coaches.
Expressing his passion for rugby league, Gene stated that the sport had given him the opportunity to fulfill his dreams. He added that he was eager to give back to local coaches and contribute to the development of the game across PNG.
