The South Sydney Rabbitohs winger, who turns 31 this year, has said he would welcome the opportunity to represent PNG in the NRL, citing his close ties to the country. He believes it would be “pretty cool” to be the inaugural player representing the nation.
Johnston has consistently demonstrated his commitment to PNG, having made his international debut with the Kumuls in 2015 after previously being involved with the New South Wales Blues squad. He played at the 2022 Rugby League World Cup and has remained loyal to the Kumuls jersey.
Though sidelined with a knee injury at the end of last year, Johnston said he had recovered well thanks to strong support from his family and teammates. His current success on the field is dedicated to them.
A key member of the Rabbitohs’ 2014 title-winning side, Johnston said another championship would mean even more to him now. He also spoke fondly of representing PNG in their historic win over Great Britain in 2019.
Johnston is on track to break the NRL try-scoring record but continues to emphasize humility and the importance of family. He said his goal is to inspire the next generation of rugby league players from PNG.
He thanked Lae Biscuit Company for partnering with him, saying the collaboration has allowed him to give back and stay connected to the people of PNG in meaningful ways.
