PNG’s NRL Dream Depends on Unity, Says Olam

Retired National Rugby League (NRL) star Justin Olam has issued a passionate call for unity, urging all Papua New Guineans to take ownership of the country’s NRL expansion project.

Olam, one of PNG’s most celebrated rugby league exports, said the decision to pursue a PNG-based NRL team has already been made by national leaders. He now believes it’s time for the public to act collectively.

PNG’s NRL Dream Depends on Unity, Says Olam

“We’ve got no choice but to support it in every way we can. This is our project now,” he said. “Everyone has a role to play—from teachers and volunteers to the media and the general public.”

Emphasizing the role of grassroots development, Olam said that equal opportunities must be created for young boys and girls in both urban and rural communities. He called for rugby league to be integrated into the education system, with better support for local coaches and volunteers.

“Not everyone will play in the NRL, but the values of discipline, purpose, and honesty will shape better citizens,” he said.

Olam, a former PNG Kumul and Melbourne Storm centre, pledged to contribute his experience and knowledge to the bid, stating that the initiative must benefit all Papua New Guineans—not just a select few.
