PNG Offers England Mid-Season Test Ahead of 2026 World Cup

Papua New Guinea has invited England to play a mid-season Test match as part of preparations for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup, LoveRugbyLeague reports. The proposal comes at a time when England faces a light international schedule following their recent Ashes defeat, creating concern about limited high-quality warm-up fixtures ahead of the global tournament.

The offer emerges as the sport prepares for a busier calendar, with the Super League expanding to 14 teams in 2026. Despite the added pressure on mid-year scheduling, the suggested clash is viewed as a stronger and more meaningful option than England’s usual mid-season Tests, which often feature France and provide limited competitive value.

Papua New Guinea coach Jason Demetriou said the match would be logistically viable and beneficial, pointing out that many PNG players are already competing in the United Kingdom. He described the proposed fixture as an ideal opportunity for both teams to fine-tune systems and combinations before the World Cup.

According to LoveRugbyLeague, discussions between officials are ongoing, and no formal agreement has been confirmed. If approved, the Test would give England an important high-intensity hit-out and provide PNG with a valuable benchmark as they build towards 2026.
