PNG franchise secures Johnston in landmark NRL deal
Papua New Guinea has made a bold statement ahead of its entry into the NRL, locking in veteran winger Alex Johnston as the foundation player for the PNG Chiefs.
The signing signals the beginning of serious squad building for the country’s 19th NRL franchise, with Johnston set to headline the team’s historic first campaign.
The South Sydney Rabbitohs star has signed a one-season contract for 2028, taking on the symbolic role of “Player No.1” for the club.
Fresh from breaking the all-time NRL try-scoring record earlier this year, Johnston brings unmatched finishing ability and experience to the new side.
The 31-year-old has strong personal ties to Papua New Guinea through his mother’s lineage in West Sepik’s Lumi area and has proudly worn the Kumuls jersey 12 times.
According to Australian reports, the deal is worth approximately K770,000 tax-free. Johnston will honour his commitments with the Rabbitohs over the next two seasons before relocating to Port Moresby.
His arrival is expected to boost the credibility of the PNG Chiefs project, giving the new club a recognised name as it prepares for its NRL debut.
Johnston is believed to have spoken with coach Wayne Bennett and his teammates about the move, receiving support to pursue the opportunity.
Club officials are now expected to continue player recruitment while infrastructure developments, including accommodation and training facilities, progress in the capital.
An official announcement from the franchise is still pending.
